The old town hall was built in its original form in 1560 and is therefore one of the oldest buildings in the city. The characteristic stepped gable with its modern carillon was only created during restoration work around the turn of the century. The historic assembly hall saw many candtage in the 16th century, including that of March 9, 1542, when the reformation for the duchies was decided.

The city council still makes political decisions in the historic town hall. The mayor's room with the paneling from 1720 can only be visited on city tours. The Kiel Canal Tourist Information is also located here.

The actual beginnings of this beautiful brick building lie in the darkness of history. Even if a coat of arms suggests the year 1566, we do know that the new church order for the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein was adopted and introduced by the state parliament here in 1542 in the council chamber.
Since then, the venerable building has had to endure a lot, such as a long siege during the Thirty Years' War and finally a devastating fire in 1973.
From the characteristic stepped gable of the Old Town Hall, a modern glockenspiel lets a folk melody sound across the Old Town Square every two hours. The building, which is more than four and a half centuries old, is used today as a representative building and on the other hand the resolutions of city politics are worked out here and voted on in the venerable council hall. Bridal couples can also tie the knot here in a dignified environment. It is also worthwhile to visit the council chamber, but especially the senate chamber with its paneling from 1720, during a guided tour.
