The Brixen Cathedral Monastery is one of the most important art monuments in South Tyrol. The monastery is especially famous for its frescoes from the Gothic period. It was originally built in the pre-Romanesque period, but was later redesigned to be Romanesque and Gothic. Particularly worth seeing are the representation of the elephant (3rd arcade) and the Adoration of the Magi (13th arcade).
Together with the adjacent buildings Brixner Dom, Johanneskapelle and Frauenkirche, the monastery forms the center of the cathedral district.

The cloister of Brixen Cathedral (Domkreuzgang Brixen) is considered one of the most important artistic monuments in South Tyrol and belongs to the former episcopal town of Brixen (Bressanone). It was built in the 14th century and connects the various parts of the cathedral—the cathedral church, the chapter house, and the parish church.

Architecturally, the cloister is a Gothic arcade with pointed arches. Its world-famous fresco cycles date from the 14th to 16th centuries and depict biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Particularly well-known are the depictions of the Annunciation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection, as well as scenes from the lives of Mary and Christ. The frescoes were created by several artists from different eras, influenced by the Brixen School and the Veronese painting tradition, among others.

Today, the cloister is freely accessible via the Cathedral Square in Brixen. It serves as a meditative, quiet place and is often referred to as “Brixen’s hidden art treasure.”
