The patronage "Maria (or in another spelling:) Assumption of Mary" of this cathedral (episcopal church) in Brixen / South Tyrol refers to one of the many memorial or festival days in honor of the Mother of God Mary. It goes back to the festival of her physical assumption into heaven, which the (Catholic) Church celebrates annually on August 15th. In the Orthodox churches the festival is called “Assumption of the Virgin Mary”.
In many rural areas it is customary for bundles of herbs to be collected by the population on this day and blessed during the festival service.

The Cathedral of Bressanone, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and St. Kassian, is the city's most significant sacred building. Many citizens consider the baroque cathedral of Brixen, whose original construction dates back to 980 AD. also known as the Basilica Minor or Cathedral. The high altar of Theodor Benedetti inside the church is one of the most beautiful baroque altars in Tyrol.

The cathedral is open daily between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. In the months of November, January, February and March, the cathedral remains closed between 12:00 and 15:00. From Easter to All Saints' Day, there are free guided tours of the cathedral and cloister, on weekdays at 10:30 and 15:00.
