Today known as the "Sun Gate," the name "Toro del Kreuz" derives from the Kreuzstraße (Cross Street), which once led into the old town here.

This street took traffic coming from Bolzano and led it through the Kreuztor (Cross Gate) to the Kleine and Große Lauben (Small and Large Arcades) and to the Michaelstor (Michael Gate) in the direction of the Pustertal Valley.

This route thus replaced the Runggadgasse (Runggad Street) as the former main traffic artery.

The Kreuztor, probably built in the first half of the 13th century, underwent many changes over the centuries, the most important of which was the construction of a parallel gate in 1911. This had become necessary because traffic had increased noticeably after the construction of the Bahnhofstraße (Station Street).

At the beginning of the 18th century, the tower of the cross gate was reduced by one floor and provided with a baroque gable, so that its lines resemble the style of the buildings of the adjacent Hofgarten.
In addition to the Kreuztor there are still three other city gates, which are also the oldest in Brixen: The Säbener gate, the Michaelstor, the cloister gate and the cross or sun gate were closed at the beginning of the 18th century after dark.

The sun gate forms the western city gate of Brixen's old town. If you step through it, you find yourself in a tangle of old streets. From the city gate there is a small passage into the courtyard garden.
