The Schanzenturm (Schanzen Tower) stands on a hill rising 28 meters above sea level in the Schanzenpark, which was still called "Heidberg von Heimechhude" in the 13th century. The former water tower, once the largest such structure in Europe, was built between 1907 and 1910 by the Hamburg Waterworks (HWW). It was designed by HWW architect Wilhelm Schwarz. The octagonal tower is 57.5 meters high and measures 32 meters in diameter. It was used as a water tower until 1961. After that, it stood empty for many years until it was converted into the four-star Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg between 2004 and 2007.

The Sternschanzenpark is a popular local recreation park in the narrow Sternschanzenviertel. There are playgrounds, sports fields and boules lanes in it. Until 1866, the area was an upstream part of the Hamburg city fortifications, to which the name also goes back, since the defensive structures of the 17th century were designed in the shape of a star. It was separated from the ramparts by the construction of the railway line between Hamburg and Altona.
In the Schanzenpark is the water tower, which was built in 1907 for the Hamburg waterworks and was in operation until 1961. After that it stood empty for a long time, from 2005-2007 it was converted into a hotel amid protests.

The Sternschanzenpark, often called Schanzenpark, is a roughly twelve-hectare, semi-public park with the 60-meter-high Schanzenturm, which is visually striking far beyond the park and was once the largest water tower in Europe, which has housed a hotel since 2007, on a 28-meter-high hill in the Hamburg-Altona district.
