This memorial stone was created out of gratitude for a man who was one of the first to praise the beauty and uniqueness of the Mark landscape in his works, which until then had been considered a sandy desert.

On Sunday, May 17th, 1914, the time had come. The dedication of the Willibald Alexis memorial stone was completed. A parade from the "Hotel zur Post", which served as the festival venue, started at 3.30 p.m. in glorious weather. It was a procession with about 250 people from Lehnin and hiking friends, accompanied by a music band. Eugen Kitzler, the publisher of the magazine "Die Mark" held the dedication speech to thunderous applause. Music groups and hiking clubs provided the artistic framework for the programme. Afterwards, the people of the procession visited the old monasteries before returning to the festival hall, where there were also other performances.

The memorial stone has survived for a hundred years and still stands in the same place. Many hikers know the stone, but have never really got to know the reason for its existence. Perhaps one or the other reader will now pick up a book by Alexis himself to understand what drove him to travel to the Mark Brandenburg back then.
