The Demer rises in Ketsingen, a sub-municipality of Tongeren, and meanders via 's Herenelderen (Riemst), Hoeselt, Bilzen and Hasselt to Diest. The river then meanders via Zichem and Aarschot to Werchter. Here it merges into the Dijle – 85 km after the source. Or … the other way around: because the Demer is the larger of the two.

Without the Demer, Diest would not be the bustling city it is today. Our ancestors already populated the left bank in prehistoric times. Logical. They find fish here, there is running water. Shipping on the Demer would stimulate trade and therefore also the growth of the city centuries later. This also developed on the high left bank.

On the right – on the low bank – the soil is generally too unstable and too wet for house building. The Demer valley is also not suitable for arable farming. The silt soil is ideal for grasslands and haymaking. It contains many nutrients from Haspengouw that the river deposits in this flood plain. This alluvial plain is known as the ‘Webbekoms Broek’.
