As beautiful as the Peace Park may be, it has an ugly history. Because until 1973 the New St. John's Cemetery was located here: burial place of the wealthy Leipzig bourgeoisie. In the workers' and farmers' state of the GDR, this was considered decadent, so the cemetery had to go. The partly ornate tombs were leveled, the stones pushed together to form a mound and covered with earth. Years later, the area was redesigned in order to hand it over as a peace park in 1983. Only the historic north gate has survived.
