The castle was built in 1604 and destroyed during the Battle of the Nations. Then rebuilt. Today there is a special school for mentally and multiply disabled children in the castle.

Schönefeld Palace was built in 1604 by Georg H. von Thümmel as a mansion. Purchased in 1754 by Hofrat Johann Friedrich Zeumer. Completely destroyed by fire during the Battle of Nations on October 18, 1813. The granddaughter of the owner at the time, Baroness Clara Hedwig von Eberstein, had a new castle built from 1871 to 1876 in the neo-baroque style. On April 25, 1881, she issued a willful injunction that after her death her entire fortune was to be used to build a supply center for the daughters of high civil servants and the military at Schönefeld Palace. She gave the institution the name: Mariannenstiftung. The foundation was administered by a board of trustees until 1949. On March 25, 1949, the state government of Saxony transferred the property to the city of Leipzig. In 1950 a nursing home for around 100 women was built, and in 1972 a nursing home for severely and multiply disabled children. In 1990 the entire castle had to be closed due to the increasingly deteriorating building fabric. On October 1st, 1992 start of the renovation of the castle. From 09.10.1997 special school for mentally handicapped children
