The towers of the Basilica of St. Ludgerus are visible slightly elevated above the market square, which together with the abbey building form the complex of the former Reichsabbey Werden., The church and abbey were founded in 799 by the Frisian missionary Ludgerus as a family monastery, in which he and five other bishops from his family have their burial place. St. Peter's Church, which was added to the west in 943, and the crypt are the oldest components. After a fire, the now existing structure was completed in 1275. Stylistically, the former abbey church belongs to the late Romanesque period and is one of the last buildings in the Rhenish transition style from Romanesque to Gothic. The three-aisled gallery basilica in the ribbed vault of the octagon above the crossing shows its special spatial effect. The baroque furnishings of the basilica, such as the high altar, the side altars, as well as the pulpit and the monks' choir stalls are from the early 18th century.

The St. Ludgerus Church in Essen-Werden is one of the most important late Romanesque church buildings in the Rhineland. It was built at the beginning of the 9th century as the abbey church of the Werden Benedictine monastery and was redesigned in the 13th century in the Rhenish transition style. Outside the actual church building is the crypt with the shrine of St. Ludgerus. Since the abbey was abolished, St. Ludgerus has been a Catholic parish church. It has had the title of a minor basilica since 1993.
