Imhotep was a high official during the 3rd Dynasty, who served King Djoser (c. 2686-2667. BC) and is credited with building Djoser's step pyramid in Saqqara.
By the Ptolemaic Period, Imhotep was worshipped as a god. The Greeks admired his reputation as a physician, leading them to identify him with Asclepius, who was their god of medicine.
It is believed that Ptolemy V (204-180 BC) may have dedicated this temple to Imhotep as thanks for the birth of his son, the future Ptolemy VI.

Its walls depict the king presenting offerings to Imhotep. Another scene shows the king offering food to the gods of the Elephantine triad; Khnum, his wife Satet and their daughter Anuket.
