The elderly artist Alice Peters-Ohsam (born 1929) (who grew up in Westerstede and now lives in Bremen) not only created a statue of the market woman, but also the fountain in the center of the square and other statues scattered around the city.

In 2012 the Northwest newspaper wrote:
"For the latest project of the Foundation for Art and Culture in the city of Westerstede, the artist Alice Peters-Ohsam, who now lives in Bremen, was once again won over. She feels closely connected to the district town and had already entrusted her artistic life's work to the Foundation in 2010.

As Chairman Bruno Steinhoff of the foundation emphasized, the native Aperin immortalized her grandmother around 30 years ago in the model that served as a template for today's sculpture and therefore affectionately called the statue "Grandma Apen". The figure shows a seated elderly market woman with animals and agricultural products lying at her feet. A location was found on the edge of the old market square where the tradition of trading began..."
