History

1. Origins and Initial Project
• Construction began in 1764 under the impetus of Louis XV, with the architect Pierre Contant d’Ivry.

• It was a major urban project, linked to the Rue Royale, which leads to the (future) Place de la Concorde.

• After several interruptions, notably during the French Revolution, the site was not immediately completed as a church.

2. Transformation under Napoleon
• Napoleon Bonaparte decided to redesign the building: it would not be a simple church but a “Temple of Glory” to celebrate his army.

• The architect chosen at this time was Pierre-Alexandre Vignon.

• After the fall of the Empire, the project reverted to a religious purpose: the building was ultimately intended to become a church once again.

3. Completion and Consecration

• After Vignon's death (1828), construction was continued by Jean-Jacques-Marie Huvé.

• The church was completed around 1842 and consecrated a few years later.

• In 1915, the building was listed as a historical monument.

4. Recent Restoration

• Since 2021, a major restoration project has been underway, focusing particularly on the façade, the Corinthian columns, and the bronze doors.

• The cost of this first phase is approximately €10 million.
