    Jesuit Church, Bratislava
The Jesuit Church (Slovak: Kostol jezuitov) is a Roman Catholic church in the Slovak capital Bratislava. It is located in the Old Town, at Franciscan Square No. 4, directly opposite the Old Town Hall at the corner of the Main Square.

The church was built as a Protestant prayer house between 1636 and 1638 on the site of the former "Armbruster House." Hans Stoss, a master builder from Augsburg, was entrusted with the construction and designed a simple building in the late Renaissance style. Strict construction criteria had to be observed. The building could not resemble a sacred structure, and the construction of a church tower was also prohibited. After three years of construction, on December 18, 1638, the internationally renowned Augsburg-born theologian Josua Wegelin (1604–1640), the eleventh in the lineage of pastors of the German Evangelical Congregation A.B., delivered the first sermon of thanks for the successful completion of the new prayer house next to the Bratislava Town Hall. The solemn consecration took place as part of a two-day church consecration festival on December 21, 1638. Josua Wegelin, the senior member of the congregation, consecrated the church in the name of the Holy Trinity and also delivered the festive sermon. Thus, the German Evangelicals of Bratislava had reached one of the high points of their existence at that time. The consecration of this church marked the beginning of the first golden age of the Bratislava Protestant congregation. The construction costs amounted to 22,925 thalers.[1]
Relief of the Jesuit coat of arms on the entrance portal
In 1672, shortly after the discovery and suppression of the Wesselény conspiracy, the Protestant faithful were forced by the order of Archbishop of Gran and Primate of Hungary, György Szelepcsényi, to hand over the church to the Jesuits, who removed the galleries and gave the church a rich Baroque interior. The exterior, however, remained largely untouched except for the portal and the ridge turret (completed in 1673).[2] After the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, the church came under the city administration and temporarily served as the court church of Governor Albert of Saxe-Teschen. In 1855, the church was returned to the Jesuits. In the 1950s, the communist rulers of Czechoslovakia expropriated the church from the Jesuit order, and it served as a simple parish church. The Jesuit order only regained possession of the church after the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

The Jesuit Church of the Nativity impresses with its elegant Baroque façade and bright, light-filled interior, adorned with ornate ceiling frescoes and delicate stucco ornamentation. Located directly on the quiet Panská Street, it offers a peaceful retreat and a worthwhile photo stop off the beaten tourist track.
