– Until Barcelona's city walls were demolished, this square was outside the city, on one of the busiest routes. Due to its proximity to the surrounding villages, which are now Barcelona's districts, the area has always been a meeting place and was used as a venue for markets and festivities that were too cramped in the city.
- Initial plans for a fortified square had been in place since 1844, but it would take until 1927 for the Plaça de Catalunya to be inaugurated.
- The naked statues were considered offensive by some citizens and during the Fraco era the nakedness of the goddess Venus was covered up. The original statue is now in the museum; a copy can be seen here.
- During his student days, Antoni Gaudí made a sketch of a 50-meter-high fountain for the Plaça as part of a university project, but the fountain was never realized.
