"The Egelsberg is the remains of a terminal moraine that the Saale Ice Age glacier, coming from the north, accumulated from sand and gravel from the Rhine. Remains of a sander can still be seen on the southern edge. The sander was created when the glacier melted through the shifting of sand and gravel with the melt water.

Of particular interest is the occurrence of low-mineral, acidic sandy soils, which are relatively rare on the Lower Rhine and offer an "ecological niche" for various endangered plant and animal communities.

The Egelsberg was used as a military training ground for many years. Despite the disruption and some destruction caused by the exercises, this was beneficial for nature conservation, as the uniqueness of the vegetation and wildlife was largely preserved. Most of the other comparable areas in the vicinity are affected by fertilization, construction work or other intensive uses.

The nature reserve also includes the wetland west of the Kirschkamper Weg, which was created by subsidence from coal mining in the last 20 years."
