Historical overview
The church of St. Michael was built in 1220 and was elevated to a parish church in 1288. It is located on one of the most beautiful squares in Vienna and is one of the oldest and most interesting churches in Vienna. Until 1784 it was run as a court parish church. Today it is the parish and monastery church of the Salvatorians.
In addition to St. Stephan and the Schottenkirche, St. Michael is mentioned from 1288 as one of the three city parish churches, which until the Josephinian parish reform in 1782 included the districts of Mariahilf, Fünfhaus, Sechshaus and Währing.
Opening times: Daily: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Michaelerkirche (1st, Michaelerplatz; holy Michael, formerly Hofpfarr- und Barnabitenkirche [the name Michaeler refers to the Barnabites who worked at the church from 1626-1923]). The church was founded in the first half of the 13th century as the second parish church (after St. Stephen); the alleged date of foundation in 1221 can only be found in a fictitious copy of a document from the 18th century, the completion before 1252.
