The Aa-kerk, also called the A-kerk, is a church building in the center of the city of Groningen. It is next to the Martinikerk the most important preserved medieval church building in the city. Other medieval churches are the Pelstergasthuiskerk and the Pepergasthuiskerk. Demolished medieval church buildings in the city are for example the Sint-Walburgkerk and the Broerkerk. Seen from the fish market, the church is perched on the Akerkhof, high above the Korenbeurs (grain market).

The Der Aa Church was built around 1200 and has been renovated and expanded several times over the centuries. The name of the church refers to the former river Aa.

Various scenes are depicted on the ceiling of the church: the Resurrection from the grave (south), the Apparition to Mary Magdalene (west), the disciples at Emmaus (north) and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (east).
The paintings depicting the suffering and resurrection of Christ were probably the final step in the expansion of the church in the 15th century. After the Reformation, the building passed into the hands of the Reformed.
After a major restoration, the church came under the management of the Der Aa Church Foundation in 1987. The church now has a business and cultural function. Worship services are no longer held there.

The Akerk is about eight hundred years old. Around 1200, a chapel was built on the eastern bank of the river A. It soon grew into a large cross basilica, a church building with a floor plan in the shape of a cross. The church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of boatmen.

The Groninger Aa-Kerk was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Today it has a red brick look and is full of religious icons inside. One of the most important Groningen sights is the Arp Schntger organ from 1702.
The church is particularly beautiful in the evenings and at night. Then the church turns into one of the most beautiful sights in Groningen. As soon as it gets dark, the Aa-Kerk is illuminated with yellow spotlights that set it apart from the silhouette of the old town.
