Groningen station is the largest station in the Dutch city of Groningen and the province of the same name. The station was used by about 32,500 people daily in 2006. It is the central hub in urban public transport. At the station, national regional and long-distance trains as well as the cross-border Stoptrein travel to Leer. The station is located on the southern side of downtown Groningen.

You get off a crowded train and onto the platform. Or you walk quickly from the city center to catch your train. And then it's suddenly quiet. For a moment, you hear nothing except the echo of children's laughter. The imposing station hall makes Groningen Central Station one of the most beautiful station buildings in the Netherlands.

Whether it's early in the morning or late in the afternoon: you'll always see people looking up in the station hall. They're marveling at the ceiling and the impressive tile murals by Groningen artist F.H. Bach. The hall is a so-called "salle des pas perdus", literally translated as a hall of lost steps. This refers to the acoustics of the hall, but also to its function.

The station hall, also known as the "Cathedral of the Winged Wheel", is without a doubt the reason why the Central Station is considered one of the most beautiful station buildings in the Netherlands. But the rest of the station building is also worth a visit. Groningen has had a train station since 1866; the current building was built at the end of the 19th century. Standing next to the statue of "Peerd van Ome Loeks" on the Stadsbalkon, you have a great view of the façade with its mix of late Gothic decorations, rose windows and Renaissance gables.
