Almost the entire old town of Nienburg is pedestrian and that's fantastic! The calm traffic here contributes much to the positive mood that radiates the old town. It is cleaner, quieter and all in all very relaxed.

Right in the middle - between the cities of Hanover and Bremen - is the city of Nienburg, directly on the Weser, the economic and cultural center on the Middle Weser. The heart of the historic city with a 1000-year history is the old town with its half-timbered facades, Renaissance fronts and brick walls. The Nienburg town hall is also located here, a magnificent building from the Weser Renaissance period. The main church in Nienburg, a three-aisled hall church in the North German brick Gothic style, was consecrated in 1441. The 72 m high church tower, a neo-Gothic building, is the city's landmark and was built in 1896/97. The Stockturm is probably the oldest building in the city. It is what remains of the former moated castle of the Counts of Hoya. The tower was used as a prison; here prisoners lay "in stocks".

The city center is particularly lively on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when "Europe's most beautiful weekly market" takes place here. Flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as sausage and cheese specialties from the region are offered at the market stalls. The non-profit foundation "Lebendige Stadt" has voted the market in Nienburg the most beautiful weekly market in Europe, because it impressed with its variety of offers, quality and its green concept.
