A magnificent Gothic brick building can also be found in the city of Nienburg. The parish church is the most striking building in the old town and, with the church square, offers a lively but quiet place to contemplate. St. Marien is a Protestant church that bears the seal of the "reliably open church". This means that it has open doors even outside of the opening times.

The sculptures of Charlemagne and Saxon Duke Widukind symbolize the reconciliation of two arch enemies and were erected for the 550th anniversary of the parish church of St. Martin.

There are two bronze statues (1991) by Volker Neuhoff on the church square: Charlemagne and Saxon Duke Widukind. The sculptures symbolize the reconciliation of two archenemies. The occasion for the installation was the 550th anniversary of the parish church of St. Martin.
