This tower is the symbol of Thessaloniki. A beautiful white tower right by the sea. The promenade from the center leads directly to this tower. It was built in the 15th century. One of the most recognizable symbols of Thessaloniki is the White Tower (Lefkas Pyrgos). It was once part of the defensive walls that were destroyed in the 19th century.
The White Tower was built in the 15th century after the conquest of Thessaloniki by Sultan Murad II, on the site of a former Byzantine defensive tower. It served as a fort, garrison building and prison.

In 1826, it became the place of execution of janissaries who rebelled against Sultan Mahmud II. For this reason, the place was called the Bloody Tower. To get rid of the odium of the massacre, the building was painted white and called the White Tower.
The White Tower is usually the starting point of many tours of Thessaloniki. It is 30 m high and 10 m in diameter.

Currently, the tower houses the Museum of Byzantine Art, where you can admire a rich collection of icons, mosaics, and monuments of religious art. Tourists are also interested in the exhibition presenting everyday life in Byzantium. In addition, the White Tower is a viewing point.
Leaving the White Tower, it is worth walking up to the nearby monument of Alexander the Great – the greatest conqueror of the ancient world.
