The fountain, which is adorned with the Roman god of water, was modeled on the Neptune fountain on Piazza Nettuno in Bologna, which Heinrich Schickhard sketched on a trip to Italy. The sandstone sculpture, the remains of which can now be seen in the city museum, weathered badly over the centuries. The fountain was redesigned shortly after the Second World War in an impressive joint effort by the city administration, citizens and the French military government. It was the first urban building project after the war that served purely artistic purposes and was financed almost exclusively by donations from the citizens. The Neptune fountain thus became a symbol of German-French friendship and peace.

The Neptune fountain on the Tübingen market square is also known as the market fountain because of its location. The fountain was designed in 1617 by the ducal court architect Heinrich Schickhardt, who also designed the lower castle portal from 1607, in the Renaissance style and was made of sandstone by Georg Miller, based on a model in Bologna, of which Schickhardt had made drawings on a trip to Italy. After three centuries, the basin and structure had become heavily weathered. A planned renovation by the Tübingen sculptor Karl Merz did not take place. In 1947, the octagonal shell limestone trough was renovated by the Tübingen sculptor Heinrich Krauß. The richly decorated column with the Neptune figure was reconstructed by David Fahrner (1904-62), Freudenstadt,[2] and recast as electroplating from the metal of melted weapons[3] by the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik WMF in Geislingen. New figures were added, including four additional figures on the base, which probably represent spring nymphs. The unveiling took place on July 3, 1947.[4] The renovation, which Mayor Adolf Hartmeyer was particularly committed to, was initially controversial due to the relatively high costs in times of economic hardship, but has received general approval since its inauguration.
