“Deep in the forest silence of the pond valley (Poligraben) there is a wooden cross, called the red god. A gruesome deed happened there 100 years ago. A pioneer had stolen and was caught. Since he couldn't bear the shame, he decided to die. At a lonely place in the forest, he chopped off twigs and intertwined them into a solid wall. Then he shoveled a pit and leaned the wall over it, supported by a crooked beating. Then he piled up dirt on the wall and lay down in the pit. With his foot he knocked over the beating, the wattled wall with the earth fell on him and buried him alive! A red wooden cross was erected at this point in memory. Since then it has not been very comfortable there. "

Other accounts say that this cross was erected in the late 17th and early 18th centuries to commemorate a murderer and his victim. Still others claim that the "Red Lord" is a plague cross. Even if the stories are not all true, they are still well made up, but, as you can see on old postcards from the Brucker camp, the "Red Lord" was still set up next to the Spittelwald chapel around 1912.
