João Afonso de Aveiro was a Portuguese pilot born in Aveiro, active in the 15th century. He accompanied Diogo Cão as a pilot on the voyage he made to the African coast in 1484, by order of D. João II. Diogo Cão, upon returning from this expedition that resulted in the discovery of the Congo and Zaire, gave the king such glowing information about the pilot's merits that the following year he was commissioned to explore the Formoso River (Benin River). [1] This exploration resulted in the discovery of the Kingdom of Benin, in Guinea. João Afonso established trading posts in Benin and it was he who gave D. João II information about Prestes João das Indias, which was an encouragement and the beginning of Portuguese relations with Ethiopia. João Afonso de Aveiro died in Benin.
