On the Wadden Sea coast, there are many remains of the Atlantic Wall. Here was the largest coastal battery in Denmark and together with a whole series of smaller cannon positions, it protects the strategic port of Esbjerg, which is decisive for the occupying powers. But the bunkers also fulfilled a number of other functions as radar stations, listening posts and command centers. Several bunkers have been converted into showrooms that today give visitors the story of a time when war dominated the world.
At Blåvand lies the great Tirpitz position with two enormous cannon bunkers. Together with the battery at Hanstholm she was to form the largest coastal battery in Denmark. At the end of the war, however, the system was not ready yet. The Tirpitz position, as well as the positions on Fanø protected the harbor entrance to Esbjerg, a strategic hub for the occupying powers. The four large naval guns with a range of 55 km were to cover the area from Nymindegab to Fanø, but with the liberation of Denmark the cannon barrels were still in Guldager Station near Esbjerg. After the war, the bunkers were closed and used by the Danish armed forces for blasting. In 1991, the southern bunker was dug up and turned into a museum.
