The memorial stone was erected a quarter of a century after Tulla's death on the then called "Maximilian Au" Hofgut. It is a Kappeler granite block, in the front of which the following words were carved: "Das groh. Baden engineer Colonel I. G. TULLA the meritorious founder of the Rhine Rectification undertaken for the great benefit of all riparians under the blessing government of the Grand Duke Carl Friedrich for honorable memory of Margrave Max von Baden 1853 ".

From 1817 onwards, the Baden engineer Johann Gottfried Tulla led the straightening of the Rhine between the Swiss border near Basel and the border with Hesse over a length of 266 kilometers, with the aim of making the Upper Rhine navigable, largely preventing floods and thus also reducing diseases such as malaria .
In 1807 he founded the Karlsruhe Engineering School, from which the Polytechnic, today's University of Karlsruhe, emerged 18 years later through a merger with Friedrich Weinbrenner's architecture school and other institutes.
