In the heart of the area declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1996 lies the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar, the "Library of Gaia," with its fascinating church and cloister featuring a circular floor plan, both unique in Portugal.

The church, characterized by its circular shape, is a replica of the Basilica of Santa Maria Redonda in Rome. It is covered by a hemispherical vaulted ceiling and surrounded by a small balcony. Its construction took 72 years due to a lack of funds from the canons and the political situation at the time—the Portuguese kingdom had been conquered by Spain—and even this place was named after a Spanish saint, Nossa Senhora do Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar).

The Monastery of Serra do Pilar is a former monastery in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, on the other side of the Douro River from Porto. The monastery is located on a hill with a nice view of the Dom Luís I Bridge and the historic center of Porto.
