Temple Garden with Temple of Apollo

In the former fruit and vegetable garden of Crown Prince Frederick (1712-1786), the Berlin architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff (1699-1753) built a summer house in 1735 at the prince's behest. When it fell into disrepair in 1791, the Privy Minister of State and Cathedral Dean Otto von Voss (1755-1823) ordered its preservation. Colonel von Tschammer, who had by then expanded his private garden to include the Temple Garden, enclosed the temple with walls and added a kitchen cellar.

After several other owners, the merchant Johann Christian Gentz acquired the Temple Garden in 1853. Carl von Diebitsch designed the Turkish Villa Gentz, built in the 1850s, the gardener's house with its minaret, and the surrounding wall with gates in an Orientalist style. The eclectic garden was designed by the horticulturalist and Landscape architect Gustav Meyer (1816-1877). In 1880, the district of Neuruppin acquired the Temple Garden, which was subsequently opened to the public. This idyllic, tree-lined garden features four sculptures from the Thomae workshop, dating from 1719. Three of these depict Suleiman I (1494-1566), Charles V (1500-1558), and Philip II (1527-1598). The Temple Garden is located directly behind the Neuruppin Museum on August-Bebel-Straße.

The Apollo Temple was built in 1735 by the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and – although modified in 1792 – still forms the centre of the Temple Garden today and gave it its name.

Knobelsdorff created his first architectural work in 1735 with the Apollo Temple in the Amalthea Garden. It was originally an open, six-columned ancient temple, the flat domed roof of which was crowned by an Apollo figure. From 1735 to 1740, the temple was the meeting place for Crown Prince Friedrich's circle of friends.
After the Neuruppin fire, State Minister Otto Carl Friedrich von Voß ordered the restoration of the temple. During the reconstruction in 1791-1793, the columns were bricked up, closing the building and installing windows. In this form, the Gentz merchant family took over the temple and garden from 1853 to 1881. Under Johann Christian Gentz, the complex essentially received its current appearance.
