"The Winkhauser Tal nature reserve is located in both Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr. The city border is formed by the Rosendeller Bach, which also divides the area into municipalities. The entire area includes the Rosendeller Bach, which flows through it roughly in the middle, and the Winkhauser Bach, which rises in a valley cut in the middle of horse pastures in Mülheim. The Essen side of the area only includes the Rosendeller Bach and its northern valley slope with a grassland-arable complex. The stream is lined with typical floodplain woody plants (mainly old silver willows, ash trees and crack willows) as well as wet and moist grassland with tall herbaceous meadows. Extensive herds of the great stinging nettle dominate the tall herbaceous meadows and indicate strong eutrophication. Of particular value are the wet areas along the stream with rare and endangered vegetation types and plant species, as well as typical stream floodplain woody plants. The Essen nature reserve forms an ecological unit with the NSG on the Mülheim side. The entire area with many natural structures and habitats is of outstanding importance for numerous animal and plant species for the biotope network in the metropolitan area."
