The only still functioning water fortress in Europe
Ziegenhain Fortress was the recruitment site. In 1776, Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel, due to lack of money, committed himself to his brother-in-law's son, King George III of Great Britain, to provide 12,000 soldiers for the fight in the breakaway colonies in North America. Friedrich received a total of 11 million thalers for this. Fallen, wounded and deserted soldiers had to be replaced, so a total of 20,000 Hessians fought for the English crown in America. The supply of the soldiers was organized from Ziegenhain.
Many young men, often from poor backgrounds, were cheated and then forced into military service.

The three-part film "The Winter That Was a Summer" (broadcast on ARD in 1976, film adaptation of the novel by Sandra Paretti) tells this part of Hessian history. Parts of the film were shot in the Ziegenhain Fortress
