Baruth had belonged to Ernestine Electoral Saxony since 1485 and only became Prussian in 1815 with the Congress of Vienna. So, since 1730, we have also found a Saxon postal miles column here. The one standing here today is a replica from 2014. The mayor of many years, Horst Wende, was very committed to this. He collected donations of around 20,000 euros and added 7,000 euros from his own pocket and unfortunately died 7 months before the inauguration (August 2014).

The postal column, about 4.50 m high, is a replica of a historic postal mileage column in Saxony and was inaugurated in 2014. It is reminiscent of the Saxon past of the city of Baruth, which only went to Prussia in 1815 as a result of the Congress of Vienna. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong had such post miles erected on the post roads throughout Electoral Saxony.

The eye-catcher of the column is a coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony with a gilded crown and the Polish royal crown with the royal Polish-Lithuanian coat of arms. August the Strong was also King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.

As a distance column, the obelisk shows the hours of walking that one needs to get to the various places by horse (1 post mile = 2 hours for a horse running normally = 9,062 meters).
