Saint Anne is the mother of Mary, the mother of God, who is not attested in the biblical texts, i.e. the grandmother of Jesus Christ. But it is mentioned in apocryphal (that is, not included in the canon of the Bible) writings, for example in the so-called "Protoevangelium of James". There is no historically reliable knowledge about Anna's life, but there are numerous traditional stories that are summarized, for example, in the medieval "Legenda Aurea" by the Dominican monk Jacobus de Voragine. Among other things, she is the patroness of Anna's Church in Düren (North Rhine-Westphalia), where a piece of her skull is kept as a relic.
In the church calendar, the day of remembrance of St. Anne - together with her husband Joachim - is on July 26th.

The Catholic Church of St. Anne, which belonged to the Franciscan convent, was probably consecrated in 1461. When the Reformation in Stendal was introduced around 1540, the monastery was dissolved.
When Catholics returned to Stendal around 1700, there were soldiers, there was again worship in the church.
A fire in 1973, the roof riders and the organ were destroyed.
In 1973, the church was struck by a fire in which the roof was destroyed with the then existing roof rider and the organ.

On the southern edge of the Mönchskirchhof stands the small late Gothic brick church of St. Anna. It was once the church of the Franciscan convent. Today it is the parish church of the Catholic parish in Stendal. Its furnishings include a remarkable St. Mary's altar from around 1430/40.
