Namba Yasaka scream

Namba Yasaka-jinja
Namba Yasaka Shrine (Japanese: 難波八阪神社, -jinja) is a Shinto shrine in Motomachi, Naniwa-ku, Osaka.

There are no exact records of when the shrine was first built. It is mentioned by name for the first time in records from 1069. As a result of the air raids on Osaka, the shrine burned down completely in 1945. The current form of the temple was completed in May 1974

In the central square of the temple complex there is a 12 meter high, 11 meter wide, 10 meter deep stone image of a lion's head, with a stage in its mouth.

Every third Sunday in January, a tug-of-war ritual based on Japanese mythology takes place there. It is based on the story of Susanoo, the god of the wind and the sea. After his banishment from the heavenly realms, he descended and killed the many-headed dragon Yamata no Orochi. In 2001, this ritual was officially recognized as an intangible cultural asset of the city of Osaka.
