      THE CLIFF COAST

      Wild, romantic, beautiful...

      Boltenhagen lies between the old Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Lübeck. A stone-free, fine sandy beach over 5 kilometers long changes from a flat coast to a cliff.

      To the west, the flat coast is joined by a picturesquely beautiful cliff that rises to 35 m. This cliff is a product of the Ice Age and is known as the glacial rubble coast. While the coasts in the north of the Baltic Sea are rockier and granite, blue clay, till, clay, chalk and rubble were deposited here by the ice age.
      Anyone can discover sanded boulders of different sizes on a hike.
      The cliffs are a very sensitive landscape with cliffs of several decimeters to meters occurring every year. The demolitions usually take place in spring and autumn. After such falls, hikers are often lucky enough to find fossils at the foot of the cliffs.

              The current pier was completed in April 1992 for 2.3 million DM. It extends 290 meters into the Baltic Sea and reconnects to maritime traffic.

              A previous structure was built in 1911. The 300-meter-long bridge was destroyed in the winter of 1941/1942 by ice, wind and water.
