Perched at an elevation of 472 metres on a rocky spur of the Strassberg mountain, the Karlsfried Castle Ruins, also known as Burgruine Karlsfried, offer a fascinating glimpse into medieval history within the picturesque Zittau Mountains (Zittauer Gebirge) in Saxony, Germany. This historic hilltop castle, strategically located between the villages of Eichgraben and Lückendorf near Zittau, once served as a vital fortified customs station on the ancient "Gabler Straße" trade route, connecting the Bohemian heartland with Upper Lusatia.

There is hardly anything left of this ruined castle. There is still a larger section of the wall from the north wall, otherwise only two small walls. In the meantime, the ruin looks a bit smaller than it really was due to the large trees.

    よくある質問

What remains of Karlsfried Castle Ruins can still be seen today?

While largely ruined, visitors can still discern significant remnants of Karlsfried Castle. These include a larger section of the north wall, the foundations of an entrance tower, and parts of a small palace. The site also features a notable rampart in the valley below, which was designed to block bypass routes and prevent evasion of tolls. The overall impression, however, is that the ruins are smaller than the original structure due to the surrounding forest growth.

What is the historical significance of Karlsfried Castle?

Karlsfried Castle was built in 1357 by Emperor Charles IV, primarily as a fortified customs station on the vital "Gabler Straße" trade route between Bohemia and Upper Lusatia. It was crucial for collecting tolls and providing protection and lodging for merchants. The castle withstood a Hussite siege in 1421 but was burned down in 1424. After being rebuilt, it was eventually purchased and demolished by the city of Zittau in 1442 to prevent its use as a base for raids.

Are there any fees or permits required to visit Karlsfried Castle Ruins?

Sturdy footwear is highly recommended for a comfortable and safe visit.

Is Karlsfried Castle Ruins suitable for families with children?

Yes, Karlsfried Castle Ruins can be a great destination for families interested in history and nature. The ruins offer a tangible connection to the past, and the surrounding forest provides opportunities for exploration. How can I get to Karlsfried Castle Ruins by public transport?

While the ruins are directly above State Road 132, specific public transport connections directly to the site might be limited. Visitors typically travel to nearby towns like Zittau or Lückendorf and then access the ruins via hiking trails or a short drive. Checking local bus schedules for routes serving Eichgraben or Lückendorf would be the best approach for public transport options.

Where can I find parking near Karlsfried Castle Ruins?

It's recommended to look for designated parking spots or safe roadside parking in the vicinity of the trailheads leading up to the ruins, particularly near the section between Eichgraben and Lückendorf.

What natural features or landmarks are near Karlsfried Castle Ruins?

Beyond the historical ruins, the area is rich in natural beauty. A notable nearby natural attraction is the Hufeisenstein (Horseshoe Stone) rock formation. The entire site is nestled within the scenic Zittau Mountains, offering dense forests and opportunities to spot blueberries in season.

Is Karlsfried Castle Ruins accessible during winter?
