Gothic House with a Neo-Gothic Facade
Since 1837, Greifswald residents have been able to buy books at their town hall and library bookstore. The neo-Gothic facade belies the fact that the building is an original Gothic structure: During a comprehensive, historically accurate renovation in 1995, it was discovered that the roof truss is made of oak timber felled as early as 1307. The neo-Gothic plaster facade, decorated with paintings in 1864, unfortunately reveals problems that necessitate a fundamental restoration to prevent further plaster loss. Help the German Foundation for Monument Protection preserve this valuable civic building!
