Barni has exhibited since the early 1960s and in 1963 received a scholarship from the city of Florence. Together with the artists Umberto Buscioni and Gianni Ruffi and the architect Adolfo Natalini, he belonged to the artists' group Scuola di Pistoia (1964-1969). In 1965 he received an invitation for the avant-garde exhibition Revort I. Documenti di arte oggettiva in Europe in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palermo in Palermo and in 1977 for the group exhibition Arte in Italia 1960-1977 in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Torino in Turin. In 1982 he was given a solo exhibition at the Festival dei due Mondi in Spoleto and in 1984 and 1988 Barni was invited on behalf of Italy to participate in the Venice Biennale.

Barni works on international architectural projects with the Italian architect Natalini. They belong to the postmodernist movement. In the Netherlands they worked on the projects: IJsselkade in Doesburg, Waagplein in Groningen, Muzenstraat in The Hague and Boscotondo in Helmond.

With his work Continuo (1995/2000), Barni contributed to the sculpture park Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri by the Swiss sculptor Daniel Spoerri in Seggiano in the Tuscany region.

The artist lives and works in Florence.

Roberto Barni was approached by architect Adolfo Natalini for a work of art in the Waagstraat complex. When Barni made the picture he thought of a man on his way to an appointment. He walks to the beat of the music and looks back. The latter refers to the memory, the desire not to forget. According to the artist, there is a tremendous energy in the past that propels people forward and drags them into the present.
