The people of Weißenstadt are also known as the slow executioners. This name goes back to a famous legend from the Fichtelgebirge.

The Weißenstadt church tower had various projections. On the lower one, which was particularly wide, a lawn grew green in summer. Likewise on the city wall that surrounded the city. The mayor, as a thrifty man, didn't want to let the grass wither unused. After various other proposals were rejected, it was agreed to let the small community bull graze it. A rope was lowered from the sound hole and the animal was pulled up. When it stuck out its tongue, throttled by the rope, everyone said that it had already tasted the grass. But they couldn't get the bull's head over the heel and finally let the animal down again. When you looked at it closely, it was dead. The citizens were happy that they hadn't pulled up the big community bull. This is how the people of Weißenstadt got the nickname: “Bummelhenker”.
