    In the "Land of Blue Gold," as the slate is called here because of its distinctive color, the tradition of Thuringian-Franconian slate mining can still be experienced today. This extraordinary industrial complex, located at what was once one of Europe's largest open-cast slate mines, provides a hands-on experience of the history and processing of slate. The entire Staatsbruch Slate Park area is a nature reserve. 170 Red List species have now been confirmed to have settled in this partially inaccessible area.

        For me, this is the highlight of the slate park. The water is so clear and the trees continue to grow under the water. It's worth going down the steep slate steps. There is also a small path down on the other side.

            This is the former Lehesten roofing slate opencast mine. Its dimensions alone are impressive; along with the nearby Oertelsbruch, it was one of the largest slate quarries on the continent (approximately 800 m long, 300 m wide, and up to 80 m deep).

              The water solution tunnel was built only for the purpose of drainage. For those tunnels, the principle applies that a tunnel that was once a water-dissolving tunnel will remain so forever. You can find it next to the historic Göpelschacht.

                You should take your time - you can spend hours there and always discover something new - including a walk around the slate quarry, and if you still have a little more breath, you can make a detour up to the Altvaterturm. Possibly. you should inform yourself in advance about the current opening times of the local restaurant.

                  A beautiful atmosphere. I started the hike at the Jeseníky Tower, which you definitely shouldn't miss. After a few km you reach the slate quarry through a beautiful forest. You can see old wagons and very beautiful houses everywhere. You can walk completely around the slate quarry, and every view is worth it.
                  Tip: Be sure to take the steep stairs to the bank, the view from below tops everything 🥰

                        The peace and romance of this former opencast mining area bring the visitor closer to nature and the history of the "blue gold".
                        The Göpel shaft, which is unique in Europe, is the heart of the “Historic Slate Mining Lehesten” area. During a guided tour you can experience the historic machine still in operation at the original location!

                                          The entire slate park area "Staatsbruch" has been a designated nature reserve since 2001. In this partially inaccessible area, 170 species on the Red List alone have now been proven, including the eagle owl. A lake over 40 meters deep was created in the former open-cast mine. This is where Lehesten's "blue gold" was mined.
