The Mainau perennial garden offers a different and fascinating picture at every season: the dark blue larkspur, sun bride (Helenium 'Rubinzwerg'), candle knotweed (Bistorta amplexicaulis 'Blackfield'), globe thistle (Echinops banaticus 'Taplow Blue') and many other perennial plants can be found here . In summer, the blossoms of the Patagonian vervain (Verbena bonariensis) seem to dance in the summer wind, while the purple coneflower (Rudbeckia fulgida) sets bright yellow color accents in late summer. Equally impressive is the pink sea of flowers of the echinacea.

Well over 20,000 plants in over 700 different varieties can be found here in the perennial garden: prairie and steppe plants are skilfully combined with magnificent perennials such as oriental poppies, peonies and daylilies.

The perennial garden is also an attractive sight in autumn and winter: grasses and woody plants with interesting bark colors and structures provide varied highlights.
