The valuable arboretum makes Mainau a unique park experience. And that in every season. This park area invites you to stroll, linger and study. Welcome among giant sequoia trees, Atlas and Lebanon cedars, metasequoias, tulip trees to name just a few of the most famous.
The word arboretum is derived from the Latin word arbor (=tree) and refers to a collection of mostly exotic trees. The Mainau Arboretum was founded in 1864 by Grand Duke Friedrich after he purchased Mainau as a summer residence in 1853. The Grand Duke, who was interested in plants, gradually had foreign trees from almost all continents planted on the island's high plateau, thus laying the foundation for today's arboretum. The trees were planted purely for collector's passion and aesthetic reasons and less for scientific reasons, as is common in other arboretums. Mainau quickly became known for its collection of rare and beautifully grown conifers and more than 150 years later it is primarily the “cone bearers” that characterize the skyline and appearance of the flower island.
Today the arboretum contains almost 250 species and varieties of woody plants, including many:
Mountain redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), which came to Europe from California in the 19th century.
