The first major port constructions were carried out by the Arabs in the 9th - 10th centuries to use Heraklion as a base for their pirate attacks. The port also became the Byzantine castle of Handax (the name of Heraklion in this era) after 961 AD. During the Venetian era, the port of Candia (as the Venetians called Heraklion) became the most important port in the Eastern Mediterranean with the greatest export activity. In the 17th century the port could accommodate 50 galleys, and especially during the Cretan War (against the Turks) the entrance was blocked every evening by a huge metal chain.
During the Ottoman period, the Turks maintained the use of this very important port. However, the beautiful harbor suffered major destructive changes due to the modernization of the 20th century to make way for the sea road and the new harbor. Most of the shipyards, small koules and the gate of the pier were demolished. The final gate was built at the starting point of today's August 25 pedestrian street and controlled the entrance to the harbor.
