The Municipality of Heraklion is located in the Basilica of St. Mark in the center of Heraklion, directly opposite the famous Lion Fountain. The basilica was built by the Venetians in 1239, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1303, but was immediately restored, in 1669 it was converted into a mosque and in 1956 it returned to its current state.
The gallery mainly hosts periodic exhibitions by various artists from Crete and throughout Greece, but sometimes there are permanent works by local painters (Thomas Fanourakis, Lefteris Kanakakis Georgios Georgiadis, Aristodimos Papadakis, Maria Fioraki) donated to the gallery.

Heraklion was in Minoan times, about 3500 years ago, the port of the Minoan palace settlement of Knossos. The Greeks then gave the city its present name several centuries later. He is derived from the mythical hero Heracles (Hercules). In the Venetian period, the city was called Candia and was the administrative seat of the Serenissima.
