Nara Park is home to approximately 1,200 trusting sika deer, considered messengers of a deity and protected as living national treasures. The deer are so greedy for the biscuits (200 yen) that they even spurn grass. The male deer no longer have antlers... which is a good thing, because otherwise several tourists would be injured.

Feeding the deer was brilliant...suddenly there was a whole bunch of them standing around you and you were gently nudged, sometimes not so gently, with the request for more...you had to move away a little more vehemently

The city of Nara is located in the south of the Japanese main island of Honshu and is home to around 400,000 human residents as well as around 1,200 deer and roe deer. Nara's deer and roe deer not only attract the interest of many tourists, but also have a very special significance for locals.
