An engineering masterpiece from the period between 1536 and 1866 is considered one of the greatest sights in the Harz Mountains - the Upper Harz Water Regale. It includes all structures that have been erected to store water and transport it to mines, some of which are far away. It is one of the largest historical water management systems in global mining and at the same time one of the most important. The Upper Harz water regime includes many reservoirs, kilometers of water ditches and underground watercourses.

At that time, water was considered indispensable for energy-intensive mining in the Upper Harz region. With the help of hydropower, all technical equipment around and in the mines was operated at that time. In particular, this included pumps with which infiltrated water was pumped out of the pits. In 330 years, around 500 kilometers of ditches, 120 reservoirs, around 30 kilometers of underground transfer tunnels and around 100 kilometers of water solution tunnels were created. The systems of the Upper Harz Water Regale extend over a total area of around 200 square kilometers in the western Harz. Today, part of the ponds there are used to obtain drinking water and to protect against flooding. However, most of the facilities are kept in working condition for the main part for cultural-historical and touristic purposes.

One of six ponds in a cascade in the Grumbach valley as well as various moats, which were used to transport the precious water. All of these facilities were built from 1680 to supply the water wheels of the mines around Hahnenklee-Bockswiese. They are part of the cultural monument "Oberharzer Wasserregal" and since 2010 also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
