In invoices from the town of Münden from the 15th and 16th centuries, the Hampescher Tower is referred to as the "New" or "Hollow Tower".

The tower, like the other towers of the town wall, was originally about 26 metres high. After the Münden town fortifications were demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, the tower was repurposed when the farmer Heinrich Ballauf had it raised to 42.50 metres in the 1860s to produce shot using the tower casting process. Shot production only began in 1871 after the tower was acquired by the local company Haendler & Natermann. It was already using the Fährenpfortenturm as a shot tower.

In 1997, the course of the town wall between the Fangenturm and the Hampescher Tower was archaeologically investigated. The work was carried out before the new Duchess Elisabeth Foundation was built, the façade of which roughly reflects the course of the town wall.
