    The Fangenturm (also Kronenturm) is a former defense tower in Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony. The 27.7 meter high tower was part of the medieval city fortifications of Münden and was built as a wall tower in the city wall. As with other dungeon towers, the naming is based on its dungeon used as a prison.

          The Kronenturm is located in the small town of Hannoversch Münden, which is in the state of Lower Saxony near the border with Hesse. The tower once belonged to the city fortifications, which were built in the Middle Ages to protect against attackers. Most of the towers of the city wall are still largely intact, but no longer have a roof. One of the best preserved towers is the Kronenturm, now also known as the Fangenturm. It was once named after the Hotel Zur Krone on Burgstrasse.

          The crown tower, which has a circular floor plan, measures over 27 meters. This distinguishes it from the other towers in the city, which have a semicircular floor plan. The only entrance to the tower is on the western side, and the so-called machicolation can still be seen on its southern side. It represents an opening through which attackers were doused with hot water or heated pitch to defend themselves.

          At the point where the tower stands, the city wall was about five meters high. The entire complex was built in the Middle Ages. At that time, the Crown Tower also served as a dungeon for prisoners. In the 17th century it was therefore also referred to as the Gray Rock. The dungeon was escape-proof, since the prisoners were only let down by rope ladders.
