The Warmer Damm owes its name to a part of Wiesbaden's city fortifications - a dam that bordered the so-called "Warm Pond", in which the outflows of the 26 thermal springs collected. The pond, which was used as a horse pond, was one of a series of ditches that had been created in the swampy area in the 17th century to protect the city. In 1805 the pond was filled in.[3][* 1] In 1810 Wilhelmstrasse was built, which ran right through the site of the former pond. The name Warmer Damm was later transferred to the newly created park, which had been designed from 1859 as an extension of the spa park by gardening director Carl Friedrich Thelemann. Together with the spa house and the spa park, it was an important place for the "social cure" in the 19th century.
