On the day of the ceremonial opening of the new Royal Court Theater, October 16, 1894, the monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was unveiled by Kaiser Wilhelm II. It was donated by the Monument Committee (founded in 1888). The Kaiser Wilhelm I monument was created in the Florentine studio of the sculptor Rafaelo Celai based on a design by Johannes Schilling (1828–1910), who had also designed the Germania monument above Rüdesheim am Rhein.
